Why is 3Money changing?

On 26th November 2018, the EU’s Fourth Anti-Money Laundering Directive (AML IV) came into force in Ireland and one of its sections relates to limits to card usage and storage. This law will apply to all 3Money customers from the 18th April 2019.

What does this mean?

You will have lower limits on top up, spend, balance held and withdrawals if you haven’t verified your identity (Premium). This won’t affect you if you’ve already provided verification documents for your account.

Your new limits, without verification, from 18th April will be:

  • €100 national withdrawals for life of card (no international)
  • €250 max balance held on the card
  • €250 max spend per month (€3,000 per year)
  • €250 max top up per month (€2,500 a year)

Submitting your documents and verifying your account will increase your limits to:

  • €750 daily national and international withdrawals (up to €1,000 a month, €12,000 a year)
  • €25,000 a year max balance
  • €25,000 a year max spend
  • €500 per day or €25,000 a year max top up

This new law brings a more thorough approach to the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing. Ireland brought AML IV into law on 26 November 2018.
This law reduces the current top up, spend, balance held and withdrawal limits, but it won’t affect customers who verified their documents and move to Premium 3Money account for free (click here to verify your card).
As of 18 April, the maximum load limit for a standard 3Money card (not verified cards) will be reduced to €250 a month. Cardholders will also have a €100 limit at ATM’s. For more, the cardholder needs to move to Premium by sending a picture of their ID and a proof of address document (dated within the last three months) through the website or 3Money app. This free process can take up to 2 working days. Remember, the documents must be full colour, have the name of the card holder and include the whole document within the picture. To verify your account, click here.
Send an email to care@3moneycare.com or call 1890 812 102 to ask about your card status. Remember to include the number on the back of your card and phone number in all emails.

There are a few different ways you can verify your card:

  1. Submit images of the required documents to care@3moneycare.com
  2. On the 3Money site, here
  3. In the app, just click ‘Premium’

You’ll need to provide high quality images, in full colour, of your ID and proof of address. It normally takes two working days to verify your card if all your documents are correct. You can use any of the following:

For your ID:

  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Garda Age Card

For proof of address (dated within 3 months):

  • Vehicle registration document
  • Tax notification document
  • Gas bill
  • Water bill
  • Electricity bill
  • Landline telephone bill
  • TV, satellite or cable bill
  • Bank or building society statement
  • Credit card statement
  • Home or motor insurance certificate

The submitted documentation will be reviewed within 48 hours. After this time frame your account will either be verified and your card will be Premium, or you will be contacted to provide additional information (e.g. a clearer image). Please remember that high quality images are required for account approval.

Remember, the documents must be full colour, have the name of the card holder and include the whole document within the picture.

  • €750 national and international withdrawals a day (up to €1,000/month and €12,000/year)
  • Balance that can be held on the card will be €25,000 at any given time
  • Maximum top-up allowed per card will be €500/day or €25,000/year
